Consume gp service from within ArcMap and add results to display

I have created a gp service and published it to ArcServer. I know the gp tool is working successfully as when I consume it in a web application it works fine, and results are added to the map.

However, what I want to do is run the gp service from within ArcMap so I can easily distribute the tool among colleagues (the tool requires arc info license where colleagues use basic license, so I want arcserver to do the "advanced" analysis and return the result)

Im running the tool from within arcmap by connecting to arcserver. It completes without error, however no results are returned. I have tried changing the output datatype (feature set, feature layer, shp etc) but makes no difference.

One work around which does work is to use the "clip and ship" script which returns the resulting .shp in a zip folder. This needs to be downloaded and extracted before adding to arcmap which is not ideal - but does prove that the gp service is at least running!

As an aside, all model parameters seem to be treated as feature sets as well as feature layers i.e. I can either select a layer as input or interactively draw on map. Is there are a way to turn off the feature set functionality? GP service was created using modelbuilder and is not a script

Many thanks!
