Centering map in QGIS

I am attempting to set the central meridian of my map at 150 degrees west longitude.

I have followed the instructions here, but I am not getting the same results. The map remains centered on the prime meridian.

I am guessing that the "Vector -> Geoprocessing -> Difference" step, is what is supposed to re-center the map, but I have gone through the entire process (I do not need to change the projection).

The "Use Vector -> Geoprocessing -> Difference" step was the only step that, in the original post, did not seem to have enough directions for me to be certain I was doing the right thing. So, this might have been where I made my error.

Can anyone provide me with some additional guidance?
