Hi i posted another question regarding a couple of scenerios related to single layer files and group layer files saved onto windows and then pulled onto a map . looking at the effects if the source data is updated. that was answered please see link below
single layer , group layer
i am interested into knowing what is the best way of supply users with datasets that have some layers filters applied to them
Workflow
At the moment i have a lot of different data sets , these are peridocially updated with new data being added.
With this datasets i have created many different layers that apply symbology , defination queries. Sometimes the layers are merged into group datasets. These are made available to users to pull onto there maps.
Problem
From my last question it looks like , if i have a single layer file that points to one data set. Then this will updated on the users map. if the source data is updated.
But if there is a group dataset , ( whos data is updated , this will not update on the users map) this will only show the snap shot of the group data when it was created and put into the users map
**Secondary Workflow **
Another system we use is to have a master map. That contains several group layers. This Mxd can be saved as a copy , or the group layers can be pulled onto new maps
* Scenerio 1 *A user takes the master map and saves a copy. If the source data contained within the layers on the master map is updated ,
will this update on there mxd showing the new data ?
will it only show the data that is contained within the groups layer when the map was saved ?
* Scenerio 2*
A user drags and drops group layers from the Master MXD onto there own map
If the source data is to be update that the group layers point to is updated.
will this update on there map ?
or will it be a snapshot in time , from when the layer was dragged onto there map ?
* Additional Questions *
Other than having a script that loops Through MXDS to find the group_layer_1 and then replace it with Group_layer_1_new can group layers be used so they are updated automatically as source data is updated.?
Is there a more interactive way of creating groups layers. So if data is updated. The maps will be updated ?
when it is possible for things to act interactively as data is updated at source
When layers will act statically
How group and indivudual layers act different
