A quick question about building a GIS portfolio website

I am now in the process of building (or, rather, updating) my GIS portfolio website (to which I will refer the readers, if any, of the cover letters accompanying my résumé/CV). As you know, many web hosting services offer website templates.

My question is this: which will look better in employers' eyes—a website that is simple, even primitive, but completely designed by me, or one that is fancier but is a modified template? (I would prefer to build a site myself, since that gives me more control over the layout; most templates have features that I do not need, at least not at this point. Yet modifying a template is potentially less time-consuming.)

All of the above refers to the style or appearance of the website. I'm afraid that the content will, at this point, be primitive and minimal one way or the other.

Any advice will be greatly appreciated.
