I'm working on a short duration side project for a design firm in SF on what is the largest map I have ever produced, 19' wide by 43 ' tall - that's not a typo, the map is going to be 43 feet tall! It will fill the back wall of a 4 story tall open air flight of stairs in a new municipal building.
The map will be viewable at a distance as you approach the stairs but also up close while on the stairs, so detail and resolution are a primary concern.
The map extent is the San Francisco Bay Area. Contents are shaded relief for above ground terrain and underwater bathymetery with contours for both; roads; major & minor towns; major geographic features; major water features.
The issues I'm having have to do with the scale of the project and the need to keep everything detailed enough to examine up close but still workable in AI. My AI doc art-board is currently set to 38" x 86" (same aspect ratio as final map but at a 1:6.25 scale - I think). I made the art board large thinking that would help me work with larger shaded relief exports, preserving as much detail as possible, but I'm running into export issues. I can't export the entire map as a full res TIF, I run out of memory. And as I add more detail to the map it's starting to slow down.
I know how to peak AI performance by simplifying over vertxed GIS linework and turning off layer thumbnails, but wondering if there are any other tips or tricks to working with VERY large map products like this?
note: for final export I know I can carve up the map into sections and export them like that, but for working its best for me to keep the file whole fr now.
