For some of the projects I do, I find it convenient to just add one of the shaded relief backgrounds available through ArcGIS online. I then export the relief separately from the vector linework, adjusting the hillshading in Photoshop and recombining everything in Illustrator. I know that many of you take pride in adjusting the hillshading various ways to illuminate things about the terrain, but I'm usually adding it just so readers will understand why the roads are all twisty in that part of the state.
There are 622 services that show up when you search ArcGIS Online for relief, and some of them don't seem to work (I click on Add but nothing ever seems to happen) while others are very specific (covering only the Netherlands or one town in Colorado).
Can anyone recommend a service that's suitable for maps at, say, 1:100,000?
