Before I ever learned cartography, 8 years ago, I taught myself to use mapmaking software and learned what shapefiles were, etc., and then made a map of my home river for Wikipedia. It was, by many standards, not very good, but I remain immensely proud of it because of how much I figured out on my own without any outside guidance. It was, for the most part, my first real map.
Now, I've finally replaced it with something a little nicer looking, all these many years later. I'm not 100% happy with how it's come out, but I think it's good enough to call done and move on to other projects. I expect I'm overly critical of it because of the sentimental value of the endeavor.
Attached are the old and the new maps.
