Mapbox Directions powered by OSRM 4.8.1

Mapbox Directions is now using the latest version of the Open Source Routing Machine (OSRM), the open-source library powering our Directions products.

Some of the improvements you will see:

• Our Directions API and Distance API now use turn penalties for car routing, favouring routes with less turns
• Our Directions API now returns the mode of travel for each step (e.g. showing cars on ferries or when a bike needs to be pushed)
• Our Map Matching API now provides better results for traces with low sample rates

Also the new version of OSRM sets the stage for exciting new Mapbox Directions features to come:

• Raster data is now supported, bringing us one step closer to the previously-introduced elevation-aware routing
• The new trip plugin computes the shortest round-trip given a set of coordinates, which provides an approximate solution to the NP-Hard Traveling Salesperson Problem
