Joining Multiple Lines in Illustrator from ArcGIS

So I've been searching for a way to do this for quite some time and now I'm not sure it's even possible so I'm curious what your workflows would be.

I have a LOT of line work for streams exported from ArcMap to AI. I'm trying to find the best way to generalize the lines in Illustrator, or at the very least join most contiguous segments. I've already generalized them as much as possible in ArcMap (from the cartography toolset) and also run "unsplit lines" and "dissolve" and can't quite get the lines to export with less segmentation (a little, but not much). So what I end up with are thousands of line segments that I can't really smooth or run scripts on (like "Round Any Corner") until they are joined.

What would be your workflow to join so many segments together where many different paths intersect? Basically, I need a way to join as many nearest contiguous line segments as possible in a single operation. Of course when you select multiple line segments and ctrl+j (join) in Illustrator, it treats ALL segments as part of a single path and draws connections where there shouldn't be.

I don't have Mapublisher, but I understand that there is a join lines operation in that extension. Have you had any luck with that?

Thanks!
