In FreeHand, I was used to creating “bingo” indexes by “pasting squares.” That is, I would just marquee-select all the streetnames in square B-9 and paste them into a spreadsheet or text document, where I’d add B-9 to the end of each line, and then eventually sort the complete listing alphabetically. But in Illustrator, the labels all run together and instead of
Stockton
Powell
Mason
Bush
Pine
when I copy and paste, I get
StocktonPowellMasonBushPine
Has anyone found a workaround? The best I’ve come up with is to do the indexing prior to compilation. That is, I paste =B-9* onto the end of each streetname in the map, and then copy or export them as text. I can then search&replace the stars with returns. It works, but it's more work and there's the danger of missing a label.
