*A few weeks ago, we have introduced User Groups feature. To illustrate how to make a use of it in your projects, we decided to give you an example of a workflow in which this feature is utilized, together with a short video tutorial.
*A workflow example: Road Maintenance and Management
Imagine you are working as a contractor on a roadworks maintenance and management project, which includes various stakeholders, such as City Management and Agency of Transportation. City Management wanted to find a contractor for its infrastructure project, through the Agency of Transportation. You are in charge of this project, and need to report on progress of your project to the Agency and City Management. At the same time, you have your own field crew together with GIS specialists who manage the project from their office. To improve your workflow and reporting process, you decided to use GIS Cloud applications. This is when ‘groups’ feature may come in handy. For both setting up the project and the progress reporting, you can make your workflow more efficient by using user groups for assigning particular permissions such as edit, view, report and others.
For example, you want your field maintenance and field inspection crews to be able to upload the field data using MDC, and monitor their daily tasks. The easiest way to do it is to create one or more ‘Field crew’ groups, for which you can manage permissions directly from GIS Cloud Manager. If you want to share a particular layer, you can assign different permissions to previously created groups in Map Editor and other GIS Cloud apps. The same goes for your office crew, whose members can have different permissions assigned. To make a reporting process easier, you can assign permissions to stakeholders from Agency of Transportation and City Management who could then have an overview of the work done directly in the project.
