Another map I'm doing for the FixWikiMaps project, this one is work-in-progress.
It's meant to replace the map in the article on the California Gold Rush. I took a shaded relief from Tom Patterson's Shaded Relief Archive, this particular one was created by Herwig Schutzler and is an absolutely gorgeous base to work with. I did lighten it up a bit in Photoshop as it's quite dark in tone. I also added the goldfields in Photoshop (rather do it there with a brush than fiddle with the vector tools in Illustrator and then try to figure out how to do the fading effect...). Rivers are from Natural Earth but I did take out a few reservoirs that weren't there in 1849.
