Hi there,
I recently designed this map (also attached) showing the route for the Volvo Ocean Race, a sailing event that takes place every three years and takes the contenders around the world.
The race begins and ends in Europe, which is one of the challenges when picking a projection for a map to show the route. On the website, a mercator projection is used with Europe shown twice to work around this.
I favoured this projection because:
- its roundness helps carry the message of 'around the world' - in a faux way.
- it shows that the boats sail around the south pole, not 'over' it (in the Mercator projection)
- it shows that the end is near the beginning (not seemingly on the other side of the world).
- it's weird and fun!
Obviously, this map has its issues, making it different but not 'better' than Mercator. It's more of a design-thing than good mapmaking practices, but did I go
overboard with this one?
