After putting the #GISTribe challenge to submit the oldest map or atlas they could find in one’s local area, I recalled that I found an old county atlas at the Ada Library. I think I saw another one similar in the county courthouse, but I was making a trip to Ada anyway, so I stopped in.

Two loose and battered pages showing the continental US.

Flipping through the pages, I realized that these atlases were really just plat books like we have today. Townships and municipalities showing sections (or Virginia Military Survey boundaries in this case), property boundaries with owners and acreage, and a number of business advertisements.

But outnumbering the business adverts are numerous lithographs of homesteads and personal portraits.

The original Hardin County Courthouse which burned down shortly after this and since replaced twice over.

They don’t make ‘em like they used to.
